Erotic literature–what we like to refer to as dirty books–is a form of literature that is meant to arouse the reader’s sexual desire. It can take the form of poetry, short stories, novels, or even non-fiction. While it has often been considered taboo and stigmatized, studies suggest that reading erotic literature may have a positive impact on individuals’ sexual relationships and sexual health.
Women report higher satisfaction
A study published in the Journal of Sex Research in 2010 found that women who read erotic literature reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction. The study surveyed over 1,000 women and found that those who read erotic literature were more likely to report higher levels of sexual satisfaction, sexual assertiveness, and positive sexual functioning. They also had a more positive attitude towards sex and were less likely to report sexual problems such as lack of desire or difficulty becoming sexually aroused.
Erotic literature and other forms of sexual expression can play an important role in helping people explore and understand their own desires, and can also improve communication and intimacy in sexual relationships.

Men better able to satisfy partners
Another study, published in the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy in 1995, found that men who read erotic literature had better sexual communication skills and were more likely to be able to satisfy their partners. The study surveyed over 600 men and found that those who read erotic literature were more likely to report better sexual communication skills, such as being able to talk openly with their partners about their sexual needs and desires. They were also more likely to report being able to satisfy their partners sexually.
More positive body image
Furthermore, a study published in the Journal of Sex Research in 2002 found that people who read erotic literature had a more positive body image and were more likely to be comfortable with their own sexuality. The study surveyed over 1,000 people and found that those who read erotic literature were more likely to report a positive body image and were less likely to report negative feelings about their own bodies. They were also more likely to report being comfortable with their own sexuality.
Dirty books as tools of self-discovery
While erotic literature has often been stigmatized and considered taboo, studies suggest that it may have a positive impact on individuals’ sexual relationships and sexual health. It can lead to higher levels of sexual satisfaction, better sexual communication skills, a more positive body image, and a greater comfort with one’s own sexuality. It is worth considering that it is not just about the physical aspects of sexual health, but also about mental and emotional aspects. Erotic literature can be a tool for self-discovery and exploration, allowing individuals to better understand and express their own desires and needs.
